About P'anne . . .

Ms. Jenkins (Phyllis, phyllis anne or p'anne), grew up in the midwest, creating art at an early age. Later, gypsy style, she traveled solo throughout the United States in her chariot, a Volkswagen convertible, studying art, drama and psychology in three universities. Ultimately, Phyllis earned a master's degree in Counseling Psychology from Santa Clara University, Santa Clara, CA.

Ms. Jenkins formed a counseling clinic where she met with success. She was invited to speak at conferences and teach professionals world-wide. At the same time, Phyllis reinhabited her art practice. In a few years her works were curated into exhibitions throughout the United States and three galleries in California

In 2024, Phyllis moved her main studio to the Zhou-B Arts Center (ZBAC) in Kansas City, MO. She won a fellowship with Artist, INC., KCMO, which teams artists from divergent arts industries (music, animation, performance art, visual art, etc) to explore ways to enhance the community as well as support success.

Phyllis uses color, shape and texture to create abstractions that transform experiences and emotions into arresting visual images where art and psychology converge in an excavation of the soul. She explores worlds created out of chaos and serenity, isolation and connection, constraint and freedom. She is interested in creating works that speak to and validate the ways we contain ourselves while longing for freedom. Her works can be seen at The ZhouB Art Center Spirit Gallery in jazz district of Kansas City, Missouri.

Artist Statement

Thoughts. Experiences. Inspiration.

My work is inspired and informed by the past - memories, longings, states of mind and feelings. Old handmade quilts, cracked tea cups, frayed walls, worn floors, strangers walking by...inspire a deeper story. It’s so personal. And vulnerable. Which is why we creatives are compelled to create, to validate the human story. It’s like there’s a primal need to record the story.  It is why, perhaps, I am both drawn and compelled to paint.

I use artist paints, crayons, pencils, markers, house paint, charcoal, ink, graphite and collage ephemera to create and destroy the surface of the canvas over and over, again and again.  Brushing, swiping, tearing, gluing, sanding, erasing, covering. . . until the story has told itself. Like life. We go through life building and tearing down, then rebuilding. It, for me, is a natural process.

The colors I use are part of the story, sometimes soft and subdued covering over the bright and brash.  Sometimes, the other way around. Reflecting the ebb and flow, the rushing forward and pulling back. It’s an act of discovery.  The more successful I am in that process, the more the viewer experiences it. I’m successful for short spurts of time, until the next one. I don’t think I ever get it just right. I let go of perfection over and over again. Telling the story doesn’t require perfection, I remind myself. Making art is a process of letting go over and over and over.
